Auto Accident 6-30-08 West Potomac Street
At 03:08 hours on June 30, 2008 companies 5, 19, LCA121, Medic 20, and EMS 910 were dispatched for an auto accident with one unconscious in front of 703 West Potomac Street. Chief 5 arrived on the scene and was met by a bystander who advised him that the driver had been thrown out of the vehicle and was laying down there as he pointed toward the vehicle; Brunswick PD was on the scene with the patient. Chief 5 went to where the patient was laying and reported to ECC that the patient had been ejected from the vehicle, was unconscious, and had a partial amputation of the left arm. ECC advised that Trooper 3 had been dispatched with an eleven minute ETA. Chief 5 established command and advised ECC to dispatch a second engine from his station for the landing zone. Communications were hampered during the entire incident as power had been knocked out from the vehicle striking a power pole which in turn knocked the BDA transmitter out in the railroad yard which knocked out all portable radio communications, all communications had to go through a mobile radio. Units from 5, 19, Medic 20, and EMS 910 arrived on the scene and the patient was boarded and collared, assessed and had a partial amputation of the left arm, a closed skull fracture, and an open fracture of the left leg, he was stabilized and transported to the landing zone where Trooper 3 transported him to Shock Trauma. The patient struck the pole and guardrails before he was ejected from the vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

On Tuesday October 13, 2009 at 02:10 hour’s companies 5, 19, 20, Medic 20 and EMS 901 was dispatched to 3826 Olive School Road for a vehicle accident. Dispatch reported two ejected with the vehicle on fire. Units arrived on the scene to find four patients out of the vehicle with the vehicle on fire. Chief 5, Lipscomb established command, aviation was called for, as was an additional medic unit. Engine 201’s crew extinguished the fire and Rescue Engine 52’s crew assisted company 19 and 20 personnel with patient care. All four patients were categorized as category A trauma patients. The driver evidently left the scene on foot and Sheriff’s Department personnel with K-9 began a search in the fields and wooded area for the driver.
Two patients were transported by air one by Trooper 3 and the other by Trooper 1 to Shock Trauma, and the other two were transported by ground to Washington County Hospital one by Ambulance 197 and the other by Ambulance 199. A fourth ambulance was requested by command to stand by for the driver if found, Ambulance 289 was to the scene to stand by.
Rescue Engine 52 and Squad 19 remained on the scene assisting the Sheriff’s Department with lighting while they conducted their investigation. The driver was eventually located and transported by Ambulance 289 to Frederick Memorial Hospital as a priority 3 patient.
Evidently, the driver lost control and struck a utility pole and a concrete culvert wall. The last unit Rescue Engine 52 cleared the scene at 06:31 hours after washing the roadway down. The accident remains under investigation by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Department.

On Thursday at 23:31 hours Companies 5, 19, and Medic 20 was dispatched for a mutual aid 10-50 PI on the Potomac River Bridge in Washington County. Dispatch reported a head on collision with entrapment. Units arrived on the scene to find three vehicles involved with a head on collision between a van and a pick up truck. The driver of the pick up truck a female was pinned and was extricated by Rescue Engine 52’s personnel with their Amkus tools and assistance from company 19 personnel. The passengers, door, and roof were removed and the dash was rolled to free her. She was a Category A trauma patient, as was the driver of the van, however she was not pinned. Aviation was called and Troopers 3 and 2 were dispatched to transport both of these patients to Trauma Centers. The driver of the third vehicle was transported to the local hospital as a priority 3 patient.
Apparently the driver of the pick up truck was headed east on the bridge and side swiped a small passenger car headed west, and then the pick up truck veered back into the westbound lane striking a westbound van head on. Units remained on the scene until 01:09 hours assisting Maryland State Police with lighting while they conducted their investigation.

| |  | Route 340 and Route 67 Auto Accident 10/3/09
On Saturday 10/3/09 at 10:17 hours Companies 5, 19, and Medic 20 were dispatched for an auto accident with the vehicle on fire at Route 340 and Route 67 in Washington County. Ambulance 199 arrived on the scene and reported a single vehicle into a guardrail with the vehicle on fire. Witnesses said the driver had gotten out of the vehicle and flagged a passerby down, who stopped and picked him up. Rescue Engine 52 arrived on the scene and pulled a 13/4 inch attack line and extinguished the fire.
It appears that the vehicle was traveling east on Route 340 and crossed the concrete median into the westbound lane striking the guardrails head on, bouncing back into the westbound roadway and the striking the guardrails at old Weverton Road where the vehicle came to rest. Chief 5 advised Washington County ECC of the situation. Potomac Valley arrived on the scene and Companies 5 and 19 returned to service.
